The rising cost of electricity and huge rebates on solar systems is attracting more and more consumers to install solar panels. Solar energy may seem complex technology but when you analyse it more closely it is easier to understand. The process is simple where the sun shines on the solar panels installed on the roof of the house, generating DC electricity, which is further fed into a solar inverter that converts it to 240V 50Hz AC electricity. This electricity is used in power appliances in the house and surplus electricity is supplied back into the mains power grid. The residential solar systems do not have any moving parts; therefore the life expectancy is long and the configuration is hassle-free. The Australian government’s generous rebate schemes allow you to save thousands on grid-connected networks as well.
There are mainly 3 types of residential solar electric power systems. Each grid type has its own strengths that determine how suited they are for your power needs.
This setup sanctions homeowners to get power from either the home solar electric system or the utility grid. In other words, the grid intertied solar system is directly connected to both, the home and traditional electric grid. According to the consumption of electricity, the grid inter-tied system transfers the excess power to the utility under the Feed-in Tariffs scheme. When the system does not provide enough power, the solar system draws power from the utility grid. This is the main advantage of this type of system type, apart from being the cheapest system.
This sort of method is a traditional grid inter-tied system with an additional battery-backup. The addition of a battery backup protects against power outages and balances the production. The access power is stored in the battery and is consumed when the system is producing less electricity. Since these systems are also connected to the grid, excess power can easily be sold. Due to complex design and instalment methods, the configuration of this is system is expensive.
The off-grid solar power system is not connected to the traditional electric power grid, making batteries an essential for the periods of excess demand and excess production. The generator is used for prolonged power production or unusual demand as a power source.
